Starting at Amalfi, its magnificent 13th-century cathedral of Sant Andrea (St Andrew) is a reflection of the town’s former size and importance. From here, walk to the sophisticated town of Ravello. Perched on a hillside, Ravello is known for its spectacular views across the Sorrentine peninsula and for centuries writers, composers and artists have flocked to the town for inspiration. Spend a day exploring the rich nature reserve of Valle delle Ferriere and walk Europe’s most spectacular balcony path ‘The Path of the Gods’ to the pink town of Positano. Staying in the nearby village of Praiano, escape the crowds and experience authentic Italian hospitality serving rustic seafood dishes and classic Amalfi wines.

DAY one
Arrive in Amalfi
The town of Amalfi can be reached via a ferry from Salerno or direct bus service from Naples. Once a grand, wealthy maritime republic, much of Amalfi tumbled into the sea after an earthquake in the 14th century. Now a tiny harbour town with huge character, cobbled streets are packed with craft shops, purveyors of limoncello and restaurants serving local seafood dishes. The centrepiece of Amalfi is the cathedral which is dedicated to St. Andrew after his relics were brought to Amalfi during the fourth crusade of the 13th century.

DAY two
Walk the Valley of the Mills to Ravello and return to Amalfi
Ease into your first day of walking with a hike to the sophisticated hillside town of Ravello. Walk through the cobbled streets of Amalfi and ascend the ‘Valley of the Mills’ trail where you can see the ruins of 13th-century water-powered paper mills. The route continues to ascend many stone staircases, which have been used for centuries to transport goods to the villages high above. In Ravello, visit the 11th century garden of Villa Cimbrone. With some of the best views of the coastline, this exquisite villa was often frequented by Winston Churchill, Salvador Dali and DH Lawrence. On leaving Ravello, you have the option to return to Amalfi on foot or take a short bus journey.

DAY three
Walk the Valle Delle Ferriere
Begin the day with a short journey to the oldest village on the coast, Scala. Here join a trail that heads deep into the Valle Delle Ferriere. Prior to the 18th century, the valley was a hive of industry, as ironworks and paper mills used the abundance of waterfalls and streams to power their factories. With a loss of monopoly, the factories closed and as such, lush, tropical vegetation reclaimed the valley. In this subtropical environment, follow a route lined with giant ferns, moss clad limestone and ancient flowers. The village of Pogerela marks the end of your exploration for today. Sitting above Amalfi, you can choose to return by bus or descend on foot.

DAY four
Walk the Path of the Gods to Positano
One of Europe’s best balcony walks, the ‘Path of the Gods’ starts from the village of Bomerano and ends at the sublime town of Positano. After a short transfer, head out onto a trail punctuated with sections of vineyards, chestnut and fig tree forests. Just a little over halfway, you’ll reach the hamlet of Nocelle where you can see the pink buildings of Positano cascading down to the sea. Descending into Positano pass by colourful artisan market stalls as you head to the beachfront cafes of Marina Grande. Later, head to your hotel in the nearby coastal village of Praiano.

Capri Island Walks and Boat Tour
Today you will enjoy a boat tour to the Isle of Capri. Famed for being a celebrity hangout, beyond the lavish streets of Capri is an island of immense beauty. With a choice of routes, follow rugged trails to Monte Solaro (the highpoint of the island) or weave your way to the north east corner where you can visit Villa Jovis built by the Roman Emperor, Tiberius in 27AD. Later, stroll back to the ostentatious centre, leaving time for an Aperol Spritz before catching the boat back to the mainland.

During this tour, you will spend 5 nights in 4* hotels. Chosen for their location, facilities and history, each accommodation is used to welcoming walkers. Many of them will be family-run so your hosts are very knowledgeable about the Amalfi region and they will always be happy to chat with you about the history of the Amalfi region. Of course, you can always call us too should you need anything during your walk. As Amalfi is a very popular destination, we may have to book another similar accommodation of equal standard. We will discuss these options with you during the booking process.
You will be provided with 5 breakfasts. Lunches are available at various cafes or food stores daily. There are numerous places to choose from for dinner each night; your hosts will give you a list of recommendations if you’d like. If you have any food allergies or intolerances, please let us know at the time of booking so we can let your hosts know. Should you have severe food allergies, it’s always worth bringing a few of your own snacks with you.

This walk is available from early April to the end of June and mid-August through to October.
Not available from 1st July – 22nd August.
From April into June days are warm and sunny (up to 30 degrees) with the flowers in full bloom. You may find that earlier in the season you can encounter a few rainy days, but generally, the piazza’s buzz with life and are perfect for enjoying an al fresco dinner. From late August into September the summer crowds have thinned, and the intense summer heat has cooled. Being on the coast, it isn’t uncommon for Amalfi to experience thunderstorms during summer days, so you should always be prepared for changeable conditions.
THE WALKING
A moderate active lifestyle makes the walking enjoyable, an exercise regime of 2 to 3 times a week is needed. The daily routes you will follow are well defined. Many sections of the walk will have prolonged sections of stone staircases that you will ascend and descend. Many will have a handrail (though not always). You will also walk along rocky trails, forest paths and the balcony trail ‘Path of the Gods’ which in some parts has a feeling of exposure. The Path of the Gods is a balcony cliff path walk, so if you suffer from severe vertigo this day of walking is not for you (you can use the ferry instead to travel between and Amalfi and Positano instead). You will be walking on forest trails and through the towns and villages of the Amalfi coast. It is commonplace in Italy that there are no separate footpaths (even in the towns) which means you will often be walking on the roads. Please always be mindful of all road users when doing so. For each of the walks, you will be provided with daily walk notes, a map and the GPX tracks if you require to use them for your own device.

Don’t want to walk one of the days? As some of the walks on this itinerary are loop walks you can explore the local towns or relax near the waterside or beachfront. On the days where you will be walking to the next town, it is not possible to travel with the luggage transfer service. The local bus and ferry services are an excellent way to reach your next destination. Your accommodation hosts will have up to date information and advice should you wish to travel to the next destination by local transport. There is always plenty of information about options for the day in your daily walk notes and as always, you can call us at the office for any help during your walk should you need any assistance.

POSITANO: The pink town of Positano is perfect for kicking back and relaxing. The town itself is worth exploring on foot. A glorious collection of terracotta buildings and artisan market stalls which all somehow cling onto the vertical rock Positano is built on. And of course, you can enjoy spotting the rich and famous moored just offshore in their luxury super yachts. If you want to visit Pompeii on this trip you can always add another night in Positano and take the bus to Sorrento train station (30mins) and change for a direct train to Pompeii train station (30mins).
AMALFI: This historic town makes for an excellent base to further explore the nearby towns of Ravello, Maiori and Minori. You can always head down to the port and hangout in one of the many waterside restaurants.
Can you extend our stay in Positano? Of course, please let us know at the time of booking if you would like to extend your time in Positano.”
Can my children walk with me? This trip cannot be booked for under 16’s. We aren’t able to offer discounted rates for children.
Is this tour OK for solo walkers? Yes this tour is suitable for solo walkers. It is likely you’ll bump into other walkers along the trails and in many of the places you will stay. You will also pass through villages and towns should you need any assistance. Generally, there is always good network coverage for mobile phones, should you worry about walking alone.
We’re travelling as friends, can we get a triple room? Triple rooms are in limited availability. Some accommodations do not offer triple rooms but we can always provide a twin or double room with a single room.
Can we reduce the days walked? This tour has been created with flexibility in mind. You can easily remove any of the walks if you wish to reduce the duration of the tour.
Can we extend the days walked? On this tour we can add in an extra of walking in Amalfi if you wish.”
HOW TO GET THERE AND AWAY
This walk starts in Amalfi and ends in Praino. The closest airport is the nearby airport of Naples.
Naples airport
Naples airport has bus connections through to Amalfi. If travelling between May and September you can pre-book a direct Pintour shuttle bus from Naples airport through to Amalfi (journey time is just over 2hrs). Alternatively, you can catch the Alibus from Naples airport to the Immacolatella (Porta Di Massa) and change for services to Amalfi (journey time around 3 hours). If you prefer, we can always organise a private transfer which is around a 1-hour journey.
By Train
From Napoli Centrale, change at Piazza Garibaldi for services to Via Nocera (40min journey). Here you can take a taxi (35min journey) to Amalfi.
Onward Travel From Praino
The easiest way to return to Naples is via taxi to Castellammare di Stabia train station, where you can catch a direct service to Naples. Alternatively, there is the option to travel by ferry via Capri to Naples harbour or there is a bus service direct to Sorrento train station where you hop on services for Naples Porta Nolana train station.
For all train travel in Italy prices, timetables and ticket reservations can be made through The Trainline or Tren Italia.
