OVERVIEW

Located in the North west of Italy, the coastal area of Cinque Terre “Five Lands” consists of the colourful, picturesque villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Moterosso al Mare, perched on the cliffs of the Ligurian Coast.

 

If breathtaking coastal views and spectacular scenery is for you then look no further. The rugged coastline of the Italian Riveria is home to steeply terraced vineyards, fine local food, hiking trails, gorgeous beaches, and narrow cobbled streets. As you walk coastal paths covered in wildflowers you’ll be rewarded with the rich cultural heritage and visual treats of breathtaking views and magical sunsets all from a choice of vantage points.

  • Visit the lighthouse (il Faro di Portofino) at the end of the promontory in the jetsetter town of Portofino. From here, you can see the Ligurian coastline all the way to Tuscany.
  • Explore the old castle, ancient houses and churches of Portovenere

ACCOMMODATION & DINING

All the accommodation has been handpicked to reflect the character and history of the region. The hotels are comfortable 3 and 4 star, in wonderful locations and have a friendly family run atmosphere. All rooms have private bathrooms and amenities, and an Italian style breakfast included each morning. The rest of the day take the opportunity to enjoy the local cuisine and wine that the region is famous for.

From May to September Camogli and the Cinque Terre can be very busy so we can’t always guarantee the accommodation listed in the itinerary. We work with several hotels of similar standard, quality and features and will provide alternatives when required. As all walks start and end at the central points of the villages, it’s your responsibility to make your way to and from your hotel. This means that if your accommodation has altered from what is in the program you need to be aware of where you are in relation to the start and end of routes. We try to modify the routes as little as possible by choosing accommodation in a similar location to what is stated in the trip

 

GENERAL INFO

HOW TO GET THERE AND AWAY

Travelling to the Start of the walk

The walk starts in Camogli at your first accommodation and ends in Portovenere on the final morning at your accommodation. Please refer to your itinerary.

The nearest airports to the Cinque Terre are in Genoa and Pisa. Florence airport also has good connections.

Genoa

Nearly all trains from Genoa go directly to Camogli, just reach the several train stations in Genoa by AMT bus (Genoa bus company). Takes approximately 42 minutes.

Alternatively, you can take a taxi directly from Genoa. The distance is approximately 25 kilometres, and the taxi ride takes about 25 minutes.

Pisa

Trains run twice daily between Pisa and Camogli. All services run directly with no transfers required and take on average 2hours and 23minutes.

Another option is to take the bus from Pisa to Genova and then take the train from Genova to Camogli. This route takes approximately 2 hrs and 34 minutes.

Florence

The quickest most convenient option is to take a train. Take a train from Firenze Campo Marte to Rapallo. The journey takes approx. 2 hrs and 46mins. Alternatively, you can take a train via La Spezia. First travel from Firenze S.M.N to La Spezia Centrale, and then take a train from La Spezia Centrale to Camogli S. Fruttuoso. This route takes approx. 4hrs and 45mins.

Bus and Train combination. Take a bus fromm Florence to Genoa Brignole approx. 3hrs and 53mins. Then board a train from Genova P.Za Principe to Camogli S. Fruttuoso, approx. 3hrs and 59mins.

Onward Travel from Portovenere

Depending on whether you are heading home, spending more time in Italy or visiting other destinations in Europe will determine where to next. You can’t get to or from Portovenere by train so make your way to one of the nearest towns of Liguria, such as La Spezia, Riomaggiore, Monterosso or Levanto. Your choice will depend on your onward travel arrangements.

The nearest airport to Monterosso al Mare is Genoa (GOA) Airport which is 70.7 km away. Other nearby airports include Pisa (PSA) (77.6 km), Bologna (BLQ) (137.1 km), Milan Linate (LIN) (149.2 km), Milan Bergamo (BGY) (168.9 km) and Florence (FLR) 176km.

The nearest airport to Riomaggiore is Pisa (PSA) Airport which is 69.1 km away. Other nearby airports include Florence (FLR) (121.6 km), Bologna (BLQ) (132.7 km), Milan Linate (LIN) (155.8 km) and Milan Bergamo (BGY) (174.2 km).

The nearest airport to La Spezia (Station) is Pisa (PSA) Airport which is 63.9 km away. Other nearby airports include Florence (FLR) (113.7 km), Bologna (BLQ) (124 km), Milan Linate (LIN) (156.4 km) and Milan Bergamo (BGY) (172.9 km).

The nearest airport to Levanto is Genoa (GOA) Airport which is 66.4 km away. Other nearby airports include Bologna (BLQ) (139.6 km), Milan Linate (LIN) (146 km), Milan Bergamo (BGY) (166.4 km) and Milan Malpensa (MXP) (176.9 km).

For all train travel in Italy prices, timetables and ticket reservations can be made through The Trainline or Tren Italia.

Another useful generic planning tool for travel is Rome2Rio should you be travelling from, or to, other destinations.

LUGGAGE TRANSFERS

This walk has the luggage transferred on Day 4 (from Bonassola to Monterosso) and Day 7 (Monterosso to Portovenere). Please mark your luggage with the tag provided. On Day 3 you will be required to take your luggage on the train from Camogli to Bonassola, where you can leave it at your accommodation to store whilst you head off to commence your walk.

AVAILABILITY

We offer this walk from March to October, as it can get quite cold in the depths of winter, and many accommodations close their doors as well at this time.

WEATHER

The temperature increases from March, making walking very pleasant. In summer, it’s quite warm but still good for walking on the trail.

The walk is not offered in winter, we believe spring and autumn are the best times as the weather is perfect for walking.

INSURANCE

We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.

For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.

We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred from our suppliers and in the office.  See the FAQ section for more information.
