Flinders Island is the largest of the 52 islands that make up the Furneaux Group, located in Bass Strait off the coast of Tasmania. It’s a spectacularly diverse, wild and rugged landscape. This trip includes traversing the large tracts of native rainforest that dot the island, climbing more than one stunning mountain and enjoying gorgeous beach after gorgeous beach.
Flinders Island is undoubtedly the least known amongst the best walking destinations in Australia. What’s more, the air is said to be the cleanest in Australia, and with about only 500 people on the island, it’s likely that you’re going to have the walk all to yourself.
Immerse yourself in the true Flinders Island experience, enjoy the lodge near Trousers Point or private self contained accommodations walking distance from Whitemark beach. On the last 2 nights, make your way to the north end of the island and stay in a beautiful farm cottage adjacent to the ocean. This property is very special and you are free to roam at will. There are some magnificent walks on the property, gorgeous places to enjoy the sunset with a wine or a beer. The beach is also close by and most likely you will have it all to yourself.
The two-course dinners are prepared by your hosts with a focus on local fresh organic produce. Each morning you will be provided with ingredients to cook yourself a hearty breakfast. Each walking day you will receive a packed walkers lunch which you will enjoy at an incredible location on the track. We supply an insulated lunch bag and a silicon collapsible tub for your convenience in your pack that we send out to you. The meals at the other end of the islands are prepared by the same chefs that work at The Wharf.
Alcohol and drinks with meals are not included with meals (except tea/coffee and juice with breakfast).
The island is 75km long and 40km wide. It sits in the middle of Bass Strait and is accessible by plane from either Melbourne or Launceston in Tasmania. We will meet you at the airport on the island on the first day and return you on the last day in plenty of time to catch your flight.
The tracks on the Flinders Island walks vary in quality but all are easily navigable. There are well-formed tracks and sections. Hike your way along rocky shorelines and sandy beaches. There are some opportunities for fit walkers to challenge themselves but the main walks are all easy to moderate, with the only exception being Mt Strzelecki. This trip operates with the support of our on island guides and transport company who work for Auswalk. They can add to your experience by offering more walking options if you need them or by varying them in order to shorten walks, or even swap them around to cater for the weather.
