The Walker’s Haute Route is a variation of the original Haute Route, staying in ensuite accommodation all the way. Navigating alpine trails below 3,000 metres, it is a challenging yet non-technical trek that showcases the finest parts of the Alps between Arolla and Zermatt. The route traverses beneath some of the highest peaks in the Alps and crosses several high passes. Embark on the iconic eastern section of the Walker’s Haute Route, experiencing six days of exquisite Mountain walking that culminates at the foot of the Matterhorn in Zermatt. This section is renowned as one of the world’s great treks, offering superlative mountain hiking from start to finish.
All the accommodation has been handpicked to reflect the character and history of the region. Enjoy 7 nights in private double occupancy rooms, from mountain lodges to 3-star hotels. All rooms have private bathrooms except for Gruben, where you will stay in a simple mountain lodge hotel with no en-suite bathroom option. Breakfast is included at all accommodation venues, and dinner is served in all apart from the last 2 nights in Tasch and Zermatt. There are dining options for you to enjoy the local cuisine and explore the town.
You can arrange with the hotel to take a picnic lunch (except for Gruben). If you prefer to plan your own lunch, all the villages have grocery stores.
Occasionally, modifications in your itinerary may be necessary, and therefore, accommodation may vary. We work with several hotels of similar standards, quality, and features and will provide alternatives when required. This means that if your accommodation has altered from what is in the program, you need to be aware of where you are in relation to the routes at the start and end. In choosing alternative accommodation, we have tried to maintain the same standards and quality.
This walk is available from 6th July through to 15th September.
Some of the trails might remain closed due to heavy snowfall before mid-June. If this happens, we will do our best to reschedule the tour for a later date.
Challenging—Tracks and trails on this tour will have prolonged ascents and descents, sections of rough surface, and steps. An active lifestyle and being an experienced walker make the journey enjoyable. We suggest an exercise regime of 3 to 4 times a week in addition to your usual weekly walks. See the fitness guide.
You will walk around 16km a day and climb an average of 950m a day (up to 1200m). The well-defined and waymarked trails cover various terrains, including high alpine pastures, rocky mountain paths, mountain, lake towns and villages.
Although the route is well-waymarked for each walk, you will be provided with a comprehensive summary of daily walks, maps (and GPX tracks), and our app for your device with GPX tracks.
The tour starts in Arolla and ends in Zermatt, Switzerland.
