Moderate Exploring the Abel Tasman Coast Track’s spectacular coastline on foot is a beautiful experience. To add to the magic we’ve added a day (or half-day) on the water, kayaking with a local guide, so you can further immerse yourself in this idyllic paradise: witness up close all the little coves and inlets from a kayak, some of which are not accessible on foot.
This is one of New Zealand’s most iconic coastal walks with the added bonus of having more sunshine hours than anywhere else in New Zealand. The Abel Tasman track is famous for its pristine golden beaches and crystal-clear water. The deep pools of freshwater, running streams and isolated beaches beckon you to take a swim.
We include 4-star accommodation and excellent meals at Awaroa Lodge, the best of creature comforts available in Marahau village and private transfers from Nelson.
The trip starts with a private transfer from Nelson to Marahau. Alternatively, if you are driving you can choose to start in Marahau. Relax in comfort in lovely accommodation directly adjacent to the park. Take a stroll along the beach, explore the boardwalk at the southern end of the track, or venture up in the hinterland behind the village. Or just sit and relax and enjoy the magnificent natural surroundings.

Transfer by water taxi to the start of this day’s walk on the Abel Tasman. Stroll off the golden sands of Torrent Bay Beach and within moments you’re in verdant native forest. Today’s highlights include a short detour to Cleopatra’s Pool where you can take a dip in the crystal-clear freshwater. On towards Anchorage Bay and a very pleasant walk back to Marahau marvelling at the views over coves and bays.

Today’s kayaking adventure starts in Marahau. This is a perfect way to hang out with a local and learn about the region. Our local guide will also provide you with the added comfort of knowing that you’ll have support if you need it.
We have given you the choice to extend out the day with a return water taxi journey and a small walk to make up a full day. We know that for many of you half a day on the water will be more than enough. This will leave you with a pleasant few extra hours in the afternoon to chill out in beautiful Marahau. Both kayaking trips come at the same cost.

A fabulously smooth track through wonderful surroundings as you walk north from Torrent Bay. There are magnificent views as you make your way along the coast, moving inland through massive tree ferns some of which are over 100 years old. Today, as on every day on this wonderful track, there are multiple opportunities to take a swim in the sea, in water so clear that you will think you are on the Mediterranean.

The easiest of the four days of walking, but with options for a bit more of a challenge via bonus extra walks at the northern and southern end of the main walk for those that are keen. Or just stick with the basics to allow you plenty of time to relax and enjoy the 4-star natural setting of Awaroa Lodge. Our last day of walking features more outstanding coastal views, beautiful forests, and the feeling of total immersion in this gorgeous part of New Zealand. Today we across Awaroa Estuary, which is only possible within a few hours of low tide, to make our way to Totaranui. Relax on the beach if you arrive early, take a swim, or explore the headland before the water taxi transfers you back to Awaroa Lodge inside the Abel Tasman National Park. This section will be walked in the opposite direction on days when low tide is in the afternoon.

After a delicious cooked breakfast in the lodge restaurant, you will be transferred by water taxi back to Marahau arriving at 12.00 pm (or onwards to Nelson Airport if needed, arriving about 1.00 pm).

This trip is not available from the end of April until the start of October. We also suggest that you book January and February well in advance and bear in mind the area gets very crowded with holidaymakers.
The end of December until the end of March is considered high season. Please bear in mind there will be additional costs for the Christmas and New Year period (22nd December – 7th January).
Spring (October to December) and autumn (March to end of April) are excellent times to walk!
This track is smooth, well-graded, with mostly gentle ascents and descents. This is as good as it gets. Walks are about 14 km a day allowing you to explore the many isolated beaches and potentially add on some of the optional walks we have suggested.
Travelling to the Start of the walk
Transfers to and from Nelson Airport are included in your package. Please advise Stroll of your arrival details if flying in so that we can book your first transfer. You can arrive at any time on your first day, but you will not be able to check into your accommodation until after 2pm. Please bear in mind that on the last day the earliest we can return you to Nelson Airport is around 1pm. Flights to Nelson are available from all major New Zealand cities. Flying direct from overseas is not possible, you will need a connecting flight. From Nelson, you will enjoy a private transfer to the beginning of the Abel Tasman Track.
You can also drive to your first accommodation in Marahau, on the last day you will take a water taxi back to Marahau where you can walk to your car. If you choose to self-drive, the roads (coastal or inland) from Christchurch are excellent and offer ample opportunities to explore on the way. Your vehicle can be left safely at your accommodation in Marahau.
Travelling from the End of the walk
The walk finishes in Marahau (if you are driving) or Nelson Airport if flying.
You will be transferred back to Nelson by private vehicle. Flights are available back to major New Zealand cities.

The whole trip ran like a well oiled machine, all the transfers, including the fabulous water taxi’s , all made our experience so easy, so much fun. Weather was amazing, accommodation was great, food (including packed lunches) was sensational. Loved every minute of the holiday.
I loved every minute, the weather, the scenery, the water, the food, even those tough up hills, knowing there was an even tougher downhill to follow. The beaches were AMAZING, and all of the staff, including the amazing water taxi drivers, were fabulous. I think the water taxi rides are definitely a highlight for me, random fun facts thrown in along the way. The delicious breakfasts, amazing packed lunches (the best) and the most wonderful meals every night. Slept like a baby every night. So much fun, I was sad when it was over . Our experience of walking the Abel Tasman New Zealand with Stroll was beyond our expectations. Everything was so well organised from beginning to end, with no detail left to chance. Sarah’s Shuttle service was wonderful, with a warm and friendly approach, and a little extra care and helpfulness thrown in, including a special stop off for some ice cream:). The Aqau Taxi service was brilliant from start to finish, and we really appreciated how the drivers added provide local information on our trip and stopping at significant sites or to spot some wildlife, feeling at times more like a tour guide company, which was excellent. The accommodation at Abel Tasman lodge was wonderful and restful! The food options are our first stop at Marahau, Hooked Restaurant and Park Cafe, were fabulous and highly recommend. We especially enjoyed Arawoa Lodge with an inhouse restaurant and cafe – all the food was wonderful and the service from the staff was exceptional. The walks themselves take you through beautiful forests and coastline, and we felt so refreshed from our time away. The walks are all very well marked out and in excellent condition thanks to NZ department of conservation. A few days were a little challenging and got a sweat up, but only moderate fitness needed, and we felt so good at the end of each day. Early December was an excellent time to go as the weather was perfect for walking, and it wasn’t very busy on the tracks. This is our second walk with Stroll, previously having walked the Three Capes Tasmania with them, and we are already planning many more! We highly recommend them.
All connections for us and our baggage worked perfectly. All we had to think about was walking. Eat, sleep, walk, repeat with confidence. Sarah’s Shuttle worked perfectly on all occasions as did aqua-taxis. Route well chosen and matched to tide timetables. Walking notes are excellent and with lots of detail.

The whole trip ran like a well oiled machine, all the transfers, including the fabulous water taxi’s , all made our experience so easy, so much fun. Weather was amazing, accommodation was great, food (including packed lunches) was sensational. Loved every minute of the holiday.

I loved every minute, the weather, the scenery, the water, the food, even those tough up hills, knowing there was an even tougher downhill to follow. The beaches were AMAZING, and all of the staff, including the amazing water taxi drivers, were fabulous. I think the water taxi rides are definitely a highlight for me, random fun facts thrown in along the way. The delicious breakfasts, amazing packed lunches (the best) and the most wonderful meals every night. Slept like a baby every night. So much fun, I was sad when it was over . Our experience of walking the Abel Tasman New Zealand with Stroll was beyond our expectations. Everything was so well organised from beginning to end, with no detail left to chance. Sarah’s Shuttle service was wonderful, with a warm and friendly approach, and a little extra care and helpfulness thrown in, including a special stop off for some ice cream:). The Aqau Taxi service was brilliant from start to finish, and we really appreciated how the drivers added provide local information on our trip and stopping at significant sites or to spot some wildlife, feeling at times more like a tour guide company, which was excellent. The accommodation at Abel Tasman lodge was wonderful and restful! The food options are our first stop at Marahau, Hooked Restaurant and Park Cafe, were fabulous and highly recommend. We especially enjoyed Arawoa Lodge with an inhouse restaurant and cafe – all the food was wonderful and the service from the staff was exceptional. The walks themselves take you through beautiful forests and coastline, and we felt so refreshed from our time away. The walks are all very well marked out and in excellent condition thanks to NZ department of conservation. A few days were a little challenging and got a sweat up, but only moderate fitness needed, and we felt so good at the end of each day. Early December was an excellent time to go as the weather was perfect for walking, and it wasn’t very busy on the tracks. This is our second walk with Stroll, previously having walked the Three Capes Tasmania with them, and we are already planning many more! We highly recommend them.

All connections for us and our baggage worked perfectly. All we had to think about was walking. Eat, sleep, walk, repeat with confidence. Sarah’s Shuttle worked perfectly on all occasions as did aqua-taxis. Route well chosen and matched to tide timetables. Walking notes are excellent and with lots of detail.
