The Queen Charlotte Track is touted as the next New Zealand Great Walk and for good reason. Glorious views over the magnificent Queen Charlotte Sound, stunning native forest and the well-deserved gourmet reputation of the Marlborough area all work in concert to make a tremendously pleasurable immersive experience. Walking in and out of your accommodation each day whilst walking from point to point engenders a real sense of satisfaction on completion.
The Marlborough area is famous for its wine and food all of which are weaved seamlessly into this walk, a magical encounter for all the senses on and off the track. The accommodations are all amazing and located right on the water and virtually on the Queen Charlotte Track so even when you’re relaxing in the evening you feel as though you are still on the walk.
The highlight of the Queen Charlotte walk is staying and eating in accommodations on the water right on the track itself. All of the accommodations are of high quality but are enhanced by their position right on the sound. It is the luxury of first-world living at its best that makes this trip as popular as it is. You’ll be warmly welcomed by all of our hosts who are ready to assist in any way they can.
This trip is available all year round. We do however suggest trying to avoid January and February when the area gets very crowded with holidaymakers. There is a surcharge at this time and the walking temperature is slightly warmer, however, it’s New Zealand so there’s no need to worry unless you are really susceptible to heat. Spring (September to December) and autumn (March to May) are excellent times to walk from a temperature perspective.
This track is undulating, well-graded and without much incline or decline. Walks on average are about 17 km a day. There’s always time to walk and explore further if you’re up to it. There’s also time to relax and enjoy all of the lodges and hotels’ gorgeous surroundings on sound. There is some elevation to this walk, as outlined on itinerary days so please consider this.
There are many ways to get to and from the track. If you have the time it might suit you best to mix the methods of travel in order to facilitate the best experience.
December through February is usually warm to hot with excellent swimming weather. But as mentioned please book well in advance for January and February due to the summer school holidays. March through May and September to November are usually cooler, with long sunny days, perfect for walking.
See the New Zealand Meteorological Service for information about average temperatures and rainfall at different times of the year.
We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.
For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.
We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred from our suppliers and in the office. See the FAQ section for more information.
For nearly 30 years we have taken pride in providing seamlessly organised walking holidays, but we know, even with that in mind, that you’ll have many more questions. You will receive a very detailed information pack and itinerary approximately 6 weeks out from departure outlining all the fine detail and much more.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask one of our destination consultants. You can get in touch with us via our contact form or email us at info@Stroll.com
