ACCOMMODATION & DINING

We have sculpted this walking holiday to take in the best of the walking in the Grampians. The walking follows a linear path, so there’s no backtracking. Just as importantly, we have managed to also reign in one of Victoria’s very best accommodation experiences with award-winning food and unrivalled wine lists.  The Royal Mail has two restaurants, Wickens at Royal Mail, and the casual diner, Parker Street Project, supported by an internationally recognised wine cellar, wine bar, landscaped gardens full of native plants, billabong-inspired swimming pool and of course, all the rooms have ensuites. Extra dinner at Wickens on weekends at extra cost.

This walk must start on a Tuesday or a Sunday. If you start on a Tuesday, you will stay at The Royal Mail on Friday and Saturday nights. This will include dinner 1 night at Parker Street Project and at Wickens the other night. Staying at The Royal Mail on the weekend will have an additional surcharge of $275 per person.

If you start on a Sunday, you will stay at The Royal Mail on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Dinner at The Parker Street Project is included for 1 night. This is included in the per-person price, and there is no additional cost.

Each day whilst you’re walking, you’ll be provided with a substantial Walkers Lunch and get to eat it at a fabulous location on the track. A Walkers Lunch is varied and may include a high protein type salad, roll or a wrap, muesli bar, cake or muffin and a piece of fruit.

Alcohol or drinks with meals are not included (except tea/coffee and juice with breakfast).

GENERAL INFO

Overall this walk is moderate to challenging, with some challenging sections every day. You will need to be reasonably walking fit. So if you are unsure, please walk a few 20km walks before you go to ensure you are ready, preferably with some uphill component. There are also some flat sections along well-marked trails and gradual ascents to mountain summits for spectacular views, which means there are some steep uphill and downhill sections. The southern end of the track is in good condition and pretty good underfoot compared to some of the northern end track.

You’ll be walking an average of 19 km a day.  With plenty of elevation and descent every day, so please be aware this walk is moderate to challenging, so again, you will need to have a good level of walking fitness. Auswalk doesn’t provide boot camp walks, so the 4 days are very achievable. Those who enjoy nature’s solitude will appreciate some days when you are more likely to encounter echidnas and kangaroos rather than other people.

This six-day itinerary has four walking days, starting in Mount William to finishing in Dunkeld. We include accommodation from day one to day six, some meals, transfers and comprehensive trip notes and walking maps. We transfer your luggage to the next accommodation so you can focus on enjoying the walking with just your daypack and what you need for the day.

For what to bring please refer to Gear Advice on our FAQ section.

Walk was as expected. Well organized, great walks, great guides. great accommodation & overly generous meals ! Good for big eaters. Felt like I was forever eating ! Temptation to not over eat was very difficult (ha ha). Excellent variety & quantity of walk munchies but thought a bit more variety on lunches would have been good ? We had 4 days of rolls & 2 days of wraps. Maybe 2 days each of rolls, wraps & maybe a salad for variety ? Accommodation at the Royal Mail was extremely enjoyed along with the dinner there and it was a great way to finish off the week. Thank you 🙂
