The 5-day Snowy Mountains Mnt Kosciuszko National Park walk is a shortened version of the 6-day version. A mecca for walkers who are keen to experience rugged scenery and beautiful wildflowers and climb to the top of Mount Kosciuszko. Hike over the plateau via Guthega, Perisher, Blue Lake and Charlottes Pass to Thredbo and soak up the superb views.
This is one of Australia’s most breathtaking landscapes. Walk alongside the Snowy River through undulating valleys and above the treeline on the alpine plain. On the last day take the chairlift ride back to the top to walk down to Thredbo via Dead Horse Gap.
Start in Jindabyne any time after 2 pm. There is no walking scheduled for today but if you arrive early enough you can walk for many kilometres around the shores of picturesque Lake Jindabyne.

After a transfer high into the mountains, the walking begins along the stunning Illawaong trail. Beyond the suspension bridge is a relatively new track that was specifically carved out along the Snowy River valley because it allows walkers to now access this absolutely stunning area. The track meaders around Blue Lake and then down to and over the Snowy River to Charlottes Pass. From Charlottes, the walk begins its stunning trajectory out and over the Alpine plain, making its way alongside the escarpment for kilometre upon kilometre, with continuous astonishing views down over Thredbo Valley. From Porcupine Rocks, it’s a gentle stroll downhill to your accommodation in Perisher. This walk can be shortened by starting at Charlottes Pass.
Walking: Moderate to challenging / 23 km or 13 km/ 7– 8 hrs or 3.5 – 4 hrs

Even if you weren’t aware that Australia has glacial lakes, you’ll see several on this walk above the tree line. Cross our famous Snowy River, walk through fields carpeted in wildflowers, stroll along high grassy ridges and view Blue Lake on the way to Caruthers Saddle. From here you can continue all the way to Thredbo. However, on the way, you will summit of the highest mountain in Australia, Mt Kosciuszko, a highlight of today and not to be missed.
Walking: Moderate / 19.5 km or 15.5km / 7.5–8.5 hrs or 4-5hrs / a shorter easier mostly flat option available omitting Caruthers and Blue Lake but includes Mnt Kosciuszko.

Take the easy way and ride the chairlift up. Today’s walk descends through fields of alpine wildflowers and snow gum forests to the Thredbo Valley. Finish the day with an easy stroll along the banks of the swift Thredbo River as it meanders down to the village.

The Snowy Mountains ski lodges and hotel accommodations are very comfortable on this walk. All are in excellent locations and are right in the park for ample opportunity to explore. Every room has its own ensuite.

Each day whilst you’re walking, you’ll be provided with a substantial Walker’s Lunch and get to eat it at a fabulous location on the track. This walk is rated as moderate with ample opportunity to push yourself to make this more challenging with additional options offered. All tracks remain well-marked, but the alpine terrain is at times undulating. There are some rough tracks along with gradual ascents to the summits, plus some steep uphill and downhill sections.
This walking holiday starts and finishes in Jindabyne with transfers between accommodation and sections of the walk. Each walking day you’ll cover an average of just over 15km, but with the options, we offer along the way that can be increased. As part of the walk, you’ll even take an optional ride on a chairlift for part of the way. We move your luggage ahead to your next accommodation at each stage, so all you need to carry is what you need for the day.

The Roof of Australia commences in Jindabyne, approximately halfway between Sydney and Melbourne.
The easiest way to get to Jindabyne is to drive. There is a daily coach service from Canberra to Cooma – you would then need to catch a taxi from Cooma to Jindabyne. You can also fly from Sydney to Cooma on Aeropelican and catch a private transfer to Jindabyne. We can supply more detailed information on request. However, it is more convenient and often cheaper to hire a car and leave it in Jindabyne during this walking holiday.
The tracks are good underfoot but there is some elevation to this walk – but only on some of the days. The days are about an average of 18 km, however, that is pushed up by the two long days at 20 km. You will need a good level of walking fitness to enjoy this walk. See the 5 or 6-day versions for a moderate-rated walk. The walk snakes its way through the Snowys and includes all the epic new walks that have been constructed these last few years. It is somewhat challenging, but well worth the effort.
This walk can be done any time from the start of December to 20th April. This mountain environment is about 10–15 degrees cooler than Melbourne and Sydney, and there is a possibility of bad weather even during summer. January and February are usually warm and the alpine wildflowers are at their best. December and March are usually mild and considered by many people to be the best times to visit.

Everything went extremely well. The route and extra options was perfect. Challenging but very doable. Also, the driver we had was prompt, very friendly. Took photos of us to mark the start of trip.

Super impressed with Auswalk. The information they sent through before the walk was excellent and answered all of our questions. Our transfers were great and all accommodation very comfortable with high quality meals included. We found the app that alerted us to whether we were on track or not very useful. We had a wonderful time and would use Auswalk again!
Enjoyed every moment of the trip. Just what I was expecting from this trip. The Snowy Mountains is fantastic place to hike with plenty of different trails. The whether was fantastic all week. This is my second trip with Stroll. Stroll is becoming the go to company for me and my friends. The trips are in great places and the accommodation and food on the trips is always outstanding.
Although we have been bushwalking for over 50 years, we have somehow missed out on the unique alpine terrain which makes this walk so distinctive. The boulder formations near Kosciuszko are awe-inspiring – a sculpture park created by nature. The walk is wonderfully varied, from mountain ash and snow gum forests, to fascinating glacier-created jagged landscape, lakes and 360 degree panoramas from the top of Kosciuszko.
The walk was a unique opportunity to experience the Australian alpine countryside, with the bonus of reaching the summit of Mt Kosciusko. Stroll’s organisation was excellent, with no delays or hitches, and with all accommodation and provided meals of very good quality. Highly recommended!

The Snowies Alpine Trail is a beautiful walk through stunning country. As a self-guided group we received great support, our transfers and luggage were managed seamlessly and the accomodation at Jindabyne and Thredbo were excellent. Highly recommend.

The Snowies Alpine trail and Kosciuszko walk is a beautiful part of the world and quite different from anywhere else I’ve walked. Being in the high country and so remote was a fabulous experience. The accommodation and transfers were spot on – thank you AusWalk for an amazing end to the year and start of a new one 🙂

Everything went extremely well. The route and extra options was perfect. Challenging but very doable. Also, the driver we had was prompt, very friendly. Took photos of us to mark the start of trip.

I loved the whole hike. The views were spectacular on varied trails with plenty of up and down. The accommodation was great. We were really well looked after in the lodges by very friendly hosts and the transport worked very well.
