The Way to Rome, the Via Francigena, is the celebrated pilgrimage to the ‘eternal city’. The Via Francigena has been walked by sovereigns, emperors, commoners and clergy alike. It was the Archbishop Sigeric of Canterbury in 994AD that created a detailed manuscript recording the towns and all of the holy sites that he visited on his way to Rome.
You will walk the Etrurian section – the last 100km from Montefiascone into Rome. Visit the medieval Papal town of Montefiascone overlooking the Bolsena Caldera Lake, also known for its white wine. Walk on ancient Roman roads via Viterbo, and continue on through beautiful shaded forests, parishes and towns until you reach your magical destination of Rome – the Eternal City.
Note: the astute amongst you may add up the daily walking to over 100km (in fact to nearer 130km)…. this is indeed the case, however, this walk is popularly known as the ‘last 100km to Rome’, we are not deliberately misleading you! There are options to shorten if you wish.
During this tour, you will spend each night in small family-run boutique B&B’s and 3-star hotels in the larger towns. Chosen for their location, facilities, and history, each accommodation welcomes walkers. Please understand we will do our best to book what is shown, but in the event we can not, we will use some other accommodations of the same standard.
You will be provided with seven breakfasts and two lunches. The additional lunches are available at various cafes or traditional Italian food stores. There are numerous places to get dinner each night so you can pick whatever takes your fancy, your hosts will happily give you a list of recommendations. If you have any food allergies or intolerances, please let us know when you book so we can let your hosts know. Should you have severe food allergies, it’s always worth bringing a few of your own snacks with you.

FROM ROME
The choice is yours, you can get to anywhere in the world from here.
This walk has the luggage transferred on all days when walking so you just carry what you need for the day.
We offer this walk from April to October, as it can get quite cold in the depths of winter, and many accommodations close their doors as well at this time.
The temperature increases from the end of March, making walking very pleasant. In summer, it’s quite warm but still good for walking on the trail.
The walk is not offered in winter; we believe spring and autumn are the best times to walk, as the weather is perfect for walking. Summer is exciting as the places you walk through come alive but it will be somewhat hotter.
See the weather information about the average local weather at different times of the year.
We require that you have adequate travel insurance against potential losses, damage or injury, including cancellation costs and loss of luggage.
For all trips that require international travel, you must have purchased travel insurance that also includes medical evacuation coverage.
We also charge a cancellation fee if you cancel your walking holiday after we have confirmed it to cover costs incurred from our suppliers and in the office. See the FAQ section for more information.
For nearly 30 years we have taken pride in providing seamlessly organised walking holidays, but we know, even with that in mind, that you’ll have many more questions. You will receive a very detailed information pack and itinerary approximately six weeks out from departure outlining all the fine detail and much more.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask one of our destination consultants, or if you have specific track-related questions if we can’t answer them, we can also ask our staff who have walked the track.
