Overview

The West Highland Way is Scotland's most popular long-distance trail, running 150 kilometres from just north of Glasgow along the shores of Loch Lomond and deep into the rugged highlands. Friendly Scottish hospitality marks every stop along the way.

Beginning in the lowlands, forest trails lead to the eastern shores of Loch Lomond before the route pushes north along old drover's roads and ancient military tracks. Rannoch Moor, one of Europe's last great wilderness areas, gives way to the famous Kingshouse Hotel, a sanctuary in the wilderness with views across to Buachaille Etive Mor, Scotland's most photographed mountain. From there, the Devil's Staircase climbs before descending to Kinlochleven, with the lively highland town of Fort William marking the end of the trail.

Highlights

  • Complete Scotland’s most popular long-distance hiking trail
  • Walk along the banks of Bonnie Loch Lomond
  • Enjoy the warmth of a Highland whisky and Scottish hospitality
  • Cross from Scotland’s lowlands into the rugged highlands
  • Hike across the beautiful wilderness of Rannoch Moor
  • Walk through Glen Nevis to the foot of the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis

Where You'll Stay

Three-star hotels and guesthouses, with the occasional four-star property, carry you through eight nights on this walk, all chosen for their location along the West Highland Way. One property worth highlighting is the Kingshouse Hotel, which has been looking after walkers on this route for decades and remains one of the great stops on the Way. Hosts throughout are knowledgeable and happy to help with any questions, and the team is reachable throughout the walk should you need anything.

In more remote settings, alternative accommodation of equivalent standard may occasionally be necessary and any such changes will always be discussed with you in advance. Given how busy this route gets, booking as soon as your travel dates are confirmed is strongly recommended.

What You'll Eat

Scotland takes its breakfasts seriously, and eight are included throughout this walk, one each morning before heading out on the West Highland Way. Lunch and dinner are yours to find each day, and the hotels, pubs and local restaurants along the route offer good eating at most stops.

Note: Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source in more remote parts of this walk.
