Overview

Walk four of the finest stages of South Australia's legendary Heysen Trail on this eight-day journey through the ancient landscapes of the Northern Flinders Ranges. Rated among the world's premier long-distance walking routes, the 1,200-kilometre Heysen Trail carves through some of the most stunning outback scenery in Australia. This itinerary traces a remarkable stretch from the Aroona Ruins in the north, via the historic Trezona and Yanyanna Huts, through the sacred amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound, across Tanderra Saddle and on to Black Gap. Country that has been shaped over hundreds of millions of years, and can only truly be understood on foot.

Highlights

  • The incredible serenity of the furthest end of the Northern Flinders
  • Panoramic views of mountains and the surrounding plains
  • Witness the Brachina Formation, one of the oldest rock formations on the planet
  • Pass through beautiful forests, gullies and gorges
  • Reach the peak of Tanderra Saddle with unheralded views
  • Impressive views of Wilpena Pound and Rawnsley Bluff

Itinerary

Day 1

RAWNSLEY PARK TO ANGORICHINA

Start at Rawnsley Park at 4.00 pm, where you will be transferred to Angorichina Village. There may be time to walk and explore near the accommodation, which is located right at the foot of the mountains. We are at the furthest end of the Northern Flinders, with little visitation; you're sure to enjoy the serenity. To be honest, I'd be very surprised if you saw anyone on the first 3 days of walking.

The award-winning Eco Villas at Rawnsley Park Station offer fully appointed kitchens, ensuites and a private lounge, while at Wilpena Pound, luxury glamping tents with ensuites sit within one of Australia's most iconic natural amphitheatres. What You'll Eat

Two-course à la carte dinners and cooked breakfasts are prepared by in-house chefs at both properties, with a focus on regional South Australian produce and wine. Kangaroo and emu occasionally feature on the menu, and world-class South Australian wines are always within easy reach. A substantial packed lunch is provided each day and enjoyed at a memorable spot on the track. If you enjoy a pre-dinner drink, we suggest bringing your own wine as the restaurants are licensed but drinks are not included in the package.

Note: Drinks and alcohol are not included with meals, with the exception of tea, coffee and juice served with breakfast.
