Overview

The Portuguese Coastal Way is one of the most popular routes to Santiago de Compostela, and for good reason. Starting in Porto, the path traces the Atlantic coastline, offering a walking experience shaped by sea air, sweeping coastal views and a succession of fishing villages before turning inland towards Santiago. Evenings are spent in 4-star and above accommodation, making this one of the most comfortable ways to walk the Camino without sacrificing any of the experience.

The history of Portugal is present at every stage, a testament to the extraordinary achievements of one of Europe's smaller countries. The regional food and wine are another highlight, with fresh seafood a constant feature of the table and some of Portugal's finest wines never far behind.

Where You'll Stay

Four stars or above is the standard throughout this walk, and every property on the route reflects the culture of the region it sits in as much as it delivers on facilities. Each one has been chosen with the walking guest in mind. A hot shower, a proper bed and a quiet en-suite room are waiting at the end of every day on the trail.

We work with several properties in each town, and the accommodation pictured is an indication of what will be booked. Where any property is unavailable, any alternative will always meet the same four-star standard.

What You'll Eat

Food is woven into the experience of walking this coast, and the towns along the route make it easy to eat well. Fourteen breakfasts are included throughout the trip, and lunch and dinner are yours to discover. Portugal's coastal towns have a long relationship with good food, shaped by the sea, the land and traditions that go back further than the Camino itself. As the route moves north into Spain, tapas bars become part of the landscape, with counters full of local specialities that are well worth lingering over.

The wine here deserves equal attention, with both Portugal and Spain producing bottles that are difficult to find beyond the towns they come from. Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source along the way.

Note: Drinks and alcohol are not included with meals, with the exception of tea, coffee and juice served with breakfast.
