Where You'll Stay

Accommodation on this tour is a mix of comfortable lodges and traditional fishermen's rorbuer, the distinctive red-painted cabins that are as much a part of the Lofoten landscape as the mountains and fjords themselves. Some sit on the waterfront, others offer a more sheltered mountain setting, and all come with communal lounges and dining areas that give each property a convivial feel. Bathroom facilities are either en-suite or shared, with full details provided in your booking confirmation.

What You'll Eat

Six breakfasts are included throughout the trip, each one featuring local ingredients to set you up before the day's hiking begins. Lunch and dinner are yours to discover, and the Lofoten Islands offer a good spread of options along the way, with fresh seafood and Norwegian staples featuring prominently on local menus.

Note: Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source in more remote parts of the islands.

More About This Trip

The walk starts and finishes in Bodø, Norway. Bodø Airport (BOO) is served by regular domestic flights from Oslo (OSL), which has good international connections. A short transfer from the airport to your accommodation is included on arrival. On the second day, a scenic ferry connects Bodø to Moskenes in the Lofoten Islands, where the walking begins.

The walk concludes back in Bodø, from where flights connect to Oslo and onward destinations.

This walk is available from 1 June to 24 August. The season is set to make the most of the Lofoten midnight sun, when the sun hovers above the horizon through the night and the mountains can be walked at any hour. Temperatures are mild for the latitude, averaging between 10°C and 16°C, though the weather above the Arctic Circle is notoriously changeable and can shift several times in a day. July is the warmest and busiest month. August brings slightly fewer crowds, 15 to 20 hours of daylight and excellent conditions for hiking. Waterproofs and warm layers are essential whatever the forecast says.

This walk is graded moderate. Daily walks average 9.3 kilometres with around 600 metres of ascent and descent, and a terrain difficulty rating of 6 out of 10. The terrain is mountainous and undulating, so sturdy walking boots with good ankle support and grip are essential.

Elevation is the primary training consideration. Include serious hill climbs in your preparation; a treadmill or stair climber works well if hills are not accessible. Squats, lunges, and core work will build the strength and stability needed on the mountainous terrain.

Daily walk notes, maps, and GPX tracks are provided.

Ferry from Bodø to Moskenes: 3.5 to 4 hours.

Ferry from Reine to Kjerkefjord: 40 minutes.

How does the car hire work? You will pick up the car from Rent a Car Lofoten after arriving by ferry into Moskenes on Day 2. You will drop the car off here on Day 7 as well in the evening. The car rental spot is 50 meters or so from the ferry terminal, and  easy to find. Further information will be provided in your travel packs.

How much driving is there each day? The KM are approximate and may change slightly depending on your accommodation. In general, drives in Lofoten are short distances and very scenic, especially on this itinerary.

- D2: Moskenes - Sorvagen (3km, 10-15 min); Sorvagen to hotel (2.5km, 10 min)

- D3: Back to Sorvagen and same hotel (2.5km, 10 min one-way)

- D4: Hotel to Reine (10km, 20 min)

- D5: No driving day. You can enjoy a walk to the ferry terminal. The ferry is ~30 minutes one-way.

- D6: Reine to Ryten/Kvalvika TH (26km, 35 min); TH to hotel (2km, 5 min)

- D7: Volandstinden hike option - to TH (5km, 5-10 min); to Moskene Ferry and rental drop-off (28km, 35 min). Nusfjord hike option - to TH (15km, 25 min); to Moskene Ferry and rental drop-off (37km, 55 min).

Does the car go on the ferry? Yes, the car will go on the ferry on the days with ferry transfers scheduled.

Where do we drop off the car? You will drop the car off at the ferry terminal in Moskenes on Day 7 where you picked it up on Day 2.

Frequently Asked Questions

The walk runs from June through August only. Temperatures sit between 10°C and 16°C — mild enough for long days on the trail, and light enough to walk well into the evening under the midnight sun.

Fly into Bodø Airport (BOO), typically via Oslo. From Bodø, a scenic ferry crossing of around three and a half to four hours takes you to Moskenes, where the islands and your rental car await. Airport transfers are not included, but it's a short trip from the airport to your first night's accommodation in Bodø.

Yes — a full rental car is included from Day 2 to Day 7, picked up at Moskenes on arrival by ferry. It's your key to getting between trailheads and accommodations across the islands, and driving distances are generally short and scenic. You're responsible for fuel, tolls, parking fees and any fines during the rental period, so return it with a full tank.

Your main luggage is transported between accommodations each day, so you only need to carry a daypack on the trail. Keep your passport and any valuables with you rather than in your main bag.

The mix is part of what makes this trip. Two nights in Bodø are spent at the Skagen Hotel, a comfortable three-star with a generous breakfast buffet. On the islands, you'll stay in traditional fishermen's cabins — rorbuer — alongside lodges and B&Bs, all chosen for their local character and setting. Most have communal lounges and dining areas, and WiFi is available throughout at no extra cost.

A daypack in the 25–30L range is ideal. Pack water, snacks, a waterproof jacket, warm layers, sun protection, your walk notes, a first aid kit and your phone. The smartphone navigation app included with the trip runs on your phone, so a power bank is worth bringing — reception is patchy in places and you'll want the battery to last.

Conditions in the Lofoten Islands can change quickly even in summer, so layers and waterproofs are non-negotiable. Quick-drying, technical fabrics work best — avoid cotton. A quality waterproof jacket with a hood is essential, as are warm mid-layers for the ridgelines and summits. Temperatures average 10°C–16°C but feel colder with wind at elevation. Waterproof over-trousers, a warm hat and gloves are worth packing even in July.

The walk is graded moderate, but it has some genuinely steep sections — several hikes, including Reinebringen and Tindstinden, involve sharp ascents on varied terrain with days regularly exceeding 12km. Building up your legs before you go makes a real difference, as elevation change tends to be harder on the body than distance.

Yes, and it's a condition of booking. Your policy must cover injury, cancellation, luggage loss and medical evacuation. Store a copy of your passport on your phone and never pack the original in your main luggage.

Norway's currency is the Norwegian Krone (NOK). Most lunches and several dinners are not included in the package, so budget accordingly — Norway is an expensive country for eating out. Card payments are widely accepted across Scandinavia, but having some NOK on hand is useful in smaller villages. Tipping is not customary in Norway the way it is in some other destinations, so no need to factor that into your budget.

Let the team know about any allergies or intolerances at booking. The accommodations with on-site restaurants — including Brygga Restaurant at Å Rorbuer, which focuses on fresh local Lofoten fish — can generally accommodate dietary needs. On days where you're sourcing your own meals, the villages along the route have cafes and local options to choose from.
