Camino Frances Stage 1: St Jean Pied de Port to Logrono - 9 Days

Overview
Begin one of the world's great pilgrimages on the first stage of the Camino Frances, walking 171 kilometres from the medieval town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port across the French Pyrenees and into northeastern Spain. Since the discovery of Saint James' tomb in the ninth century, pilgrims have been making this journey to Santiago de Compostela, and the sense of shared purpose on the trail remains as powerful today as it ever was. The iconic scallop shell markers guide the way through rolling countryside, ancient villages and some of the finest scenery on the full Camino route. Whether walked for spiritual reflection, personal challenge or pure adventure, Stage 1 sets the tone for everything that follows.

Itinerary
Day 1
On this first day, you can view the sights of St Jean Pied de Port after checking in to your hotel in the centre of town. This beautiful walled city is the modern-day starting point for the full Camino Frances route. Nestled in the French Pyrenees, the Spanish border is a mere 8km away. Visit the old prison and the popular Gate of St James as you explore the area. Before leaving, take time to explore the old medieval walls, where you can see the original city gates at either end of the Rue de la Citadelle, the town’s main cobbled street. Later, collect your pilgrim's passport ahead of your first day of walking tomorrow.

Nights are spent in small, family-run hotels and guesthouses that have been welcoming Camino walkers for many years. All rooms are ensuite, and the atmosphere is characteristically warm, with most fellow guests sharing the same journey.
Note: Single rooms are available but limited on this route. If travelling with others but requiring a single room, early booking is strongly advised. A single occupancy fee applies.
What You'll Eat
Breakfasts are included throughout the walk. Many of the accommodations have their own restaurants serving regional dishes with local ingredients, and dinners can be added as a supplement each evening if preferred. Lunches are yours to discover along the way — local cheeses, cured meats and the remarkable variety of breads found along the Camino make for a great midday spread.
