Camino Le Puy: Stage 6 - Aire Sur L'Adour to St. Jean Pied de Port - 9 Days
This walk begins in Aire-sur-l'Adour, a charming medieval town on the Adour River in Gascony, known for its impressive Gothic cathedral of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, historic cobbled streets and handsome squares.
The Le Puy Way meanders through peaceful green landscapes, crossing fields, rolling hills and quiet villages that retain their rural character. Days follow a gentle rhythm, with expansive views of the countryside unfolding at every stage. Villages like Miramont-Sensacq, Arzacq-Arraziguet and Arthez-de-Béarn each offer a glimpse into the area's history and culture through their traditional architecture and tranquil settings.
The route progresses towards the French Basque Country, passing notable landmarks including the 12th-century Abbey of Sauvelade and the Soyartz Chapel, which offers sweeping views of the Pyrenees. The walk concludes in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, a beautifully preserved walled town with a rich cultural legacy and a memorable finale to any journey through Gascony.

Every day of this stage brings you closer to St-Jean-Pied-de-Port, the finishing point of Camino Le Puy. You will find yourself in family-run hotels and guesthouses that have long been welcoming walkers. Rooms are private and have an ensuite. Given the logistics of booking eight consecutive nights, walking days may occasionally be slightly shortened or lengthened to ensure all the accommodation lines up. Where alternative accommodation is substituted for those listed, it will always meet the same standard.
Single Rooms
If you are travelling with others but would prefer a single room, we recommend booking as early as possible. Availability can be limited on this popular route and a single occupancy fee applies.
Each of the eight mornings begins with breakfast at your accommodation, setting you up well before the day's walking begins. Lunch is an opportunity to eat well and explore, with local cheeses, cured meats and a good variety of breads easy to find at stops along the route. In the evenings, many properties on this stage have their own restaurants serving dishes rooted in the local food culture, and dinner can be added as a supplement for those who want the full picture.
Note: Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source along the way.
The walk starts in Aire-sur-l'Adour and finishes in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. The most convenient airport is Pau Pyrénées (PUF), with connections across Europe, from where a bus to Aire-sur-l'Adour takes around 1 hour. For those travelling by rail, trains from Paris reach Pau in around 4-5 hours, with a bus connection onward to Aire-sur-l'Adour taking around 1 to 1.5 hours. Book French rail tickets in advance through SNCF.
The walk ends in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. The most practical departure option is a bus to Biarritz Pays Basque Airport (BIQ), taking around 1 hour, with onward connections across Europe. Alternatively, a short regional train connects to Bayonne, from where mainline rail services run to Bordeaux, Paris, and beyond.
This walk is available from April to October, with no fixed start days.
This final stage of the Le Puy route passes through Béarn and the Basque Country before climbing to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, and the landscape and weather shift noticeably as the Pyrenees draw closer.
Spring brings gentle temperatures and a countryside filled with flowering plants, and the trails are quieter in April and May.
Summer temperatures can reach 26°C and above in the Gers and Landes sections, though the Basque foothills tend to be cooler and breezier. Early starts are sensible in July and August on exposed stretches.
Late September is a sweet spot, with harvest colour in the vineyards, fewer walkers on the trail and very pleasant conditions for the final approach to Saint-Jean. October remains mild on this lower section of the route, though rain becomes more likely as the season draws in, particularly in the Basque hills. Pack a waterproof whatever the month.

Graded easy to moderate, this tour earns its rating through the demands of consecutive days on the trail rather than the difficulty of any individual stage. Some stages may be slightly shorter or longer than planned to suit accommodation bookings, and you will be notified in advance if this is the case.
Trails are well-defined throughout, following an ancient pilgrim route across varied terrain. Expect rocky paths, farm and forest tracks, and long open stretches of countryside, with sustained climbs to hilltop towns and villages. Some sections run alongside roads, so walkers should remain mindful of traffic at all times. Good walking boots are essential.
Daily walks cover up to 31 kilometres with up to 300 metres of ascent and descent. You should be comfortable with both the distance and the elevation before setting out.
The route is waymarked throughout by the iconic scallop-shell markers, and with fellow pilgrims on the trail, navigation is straightforward. Daily walk notes, maps, and GPX tracks are provided.
You must hold adequate travel insurance for your trip, including cover for personal liability and accidental injury and illness. For all trips involving international travel, your policy must also include emergency medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation cover. We strongly recommend your policy also covers trip cancellation and curtailment, and loss of or damage to luggage.
A cancellation fee usually applies if you cancel after your booking is confirmed. Travel insurance with cancellation cover will generally cover this fee, so it's worth arranging your policy at the time of booking.

It will be up to you to place your luggage at the designated luggage pick-up point within the hotel by 8.00 am when required. This generally will be at reception or where you pick up your luggage the night before. Please consult your hosts if any details. Bags must be less than 13kg.
While dinners are not included in the standard package, we strongly recommend adding a dinner supplement for your walk. In many locations along this route, restaurant options are limited or require advance booking, and in some villages, dinner at your accommodation is the only option available.

The whole walk was wonderful with great route to follow on Komoot and accommodation that was friendly and comfortable. Accommodation was excellent, our farmhouse stays were beyond expectations with wonderful helpful hosts. Some days were challenging but enjoyable and I got to push myself thoroughly enjoyed the walk. The assistance with any issue along the way and quick response even on weekends, polite and helpful staff was awesome.
