Overview

The Coast to Coast Yorkshire Dales walk takes in some of the finest walking in the UK, offering a fantastic variety of scenery and experience without the full demands of the classic Coast to Coast route.

Starting in the old market town of Kirkby Stephen and finishing in the small fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea, this 10-day, 175-kilometre walk passes through some of the most celebrated landscapes in England. Much of the route moves through the National Park areas of the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, where walkers can lose themselves in the magical mists that roll across these timeless hills.

Highlights

  • Hike to the summit of the Nine Standards Rigg with its mysterious stone mounds
  • Industrial archaeology & old mining ruins in the hills around Reeth
  • Rolling green hills, drystone walls and old churches with stunning stained-glass windows
  • Picturesque quaint country villages and farms
  • Stone Age standing stones, medieval stone crosses & old estate boundary markers on the North York Moors
  • Hedgerows alive with birds in the Vale of Mowbray and fluffy sheep in the Yorkshire Dales
  • Stay in iconic country pubs & charming B&Bs for 11 nights, enjoying real country hospitality

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Kirkby Stephen

Arrive at Kirkby Stephen at your own leisure. Explore the town and the Stainmore Railway Company or the other various other walks in the area like out to Pendragon and Brough castles. These Castles were built to keep out the marauding Scots and were part of a system of Pele towers strewn across northern England. Allegedly Pendragon was first built by King Arthur’s father, however, this is probably just a romantic story but a good one nonetheless.

Where You'll Stay

Few things define the Coast to Coast experience quite like the B&Bs and country pubs along the way, and eleven nights across this walk put you right in the middle of that tradition. Most properties sit at three or four stars, and the hosts bring a warmth and personal knowledge of the route that is hard to find elsewhere. Many have walked the Coast to Coast themselves, some more than once, and all properties are well cared for and comfortable. Real local ales and genuine country hospitality are part of the package at every stop. On occasion, an alternative property of equal quality may be used in place of those listed due to availability.

What You'll Eat

Food on the Coast to Coast is as much a part of the experience as the walking. Eleven home-cooked breakfasts are included throughout, each one a proper start to a day on the Coast to Coast. Ten walker's lunches are provided daily to keep energy levels up on the trail. Dinner is left open each evening, and with country pubs, real ales and hearty local cooking at every stop along the route, exploring that side of things is one of the quiet pleasures of walking through this part of England.

Note: Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source along the way.
