Lake Como & The Villa Gardens – 7 Days

7 Days
Easy to Moderate

Overview

The Italian Lakes have drawn visitors since Roman times, and walking remains the finest way to experience a region where the most rewarding landscapes are accessible only on foot. Lake Como in particular has long been a favoured destination, its shores lined with magnificent villas and botanical gardens that have captivated travellers for centuries.

This walk is built around flexibility, offering a selection of five routes that allow walkers to explore the lake and its surroundings at their own pace. The villa gardens are a highlight throughout, with Villa Carlotta, Villa Balbaniello, Villa Melzi and Villa Monastero among the stops along the way. The walking moves between orchards and olive groves, clifftop paths with panoramic lake views and the charming villages that line the shore, including Bellagio, described by composer Gabriel Fauré as one of the most voluptuous sites in Italy.

Each evening the walk returns to Lenno, a beautifully positioned village on the lakeshore and an ideal base for exploring one of Italy's most celebrated regions. The Antica Strada Regina, an ancient Roman pathway running along the western bank of the lake, is among the most memorable stages of the journey.

Where You'll Stay

During this tour, you will stay in double occupancy rooms with private facilities, each one well located on the promenade and well suited to welcoming walkers. The hosts are knowledgeable about the region and always happy to talk about the local history, food and wine. Our team is also on hand throughout the walk, should you need anything.

It is worth noting that Italian hotel ratings do not always correspond to international standards. A three-star hotel in Italy will often sit closer to a two-star property by international comparison, and most hotels below four stars do not have air conditioning. B&Bs on this route are simple in style, some more charming than others, with different room offerings at different price points. For upgraded accommodation, please see the Lake Como and the Must-See Villa Gardens in Style walk option.

What You'll Eat

Each morning of the trip begins with breakfast, included on all six days of the walk. Lunch and dinner are yours to find, and Lake Como offers plenty of good options for both. Cafes and local food stores are easy to come by along the route, and your hosts will be happy to put together a list of dinner recommendations each evening so you can choose wherever takes your fancy. Your walk notes will also include insider tips on where to find the freshest bread, where to taste local olive oil and wine, and the best options along the route.

Note: Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source along the way.
