OverviewOverview
This walk takes in two of northern Italy's most distinctive lakes, moving from the shores of Lake Maggiore to the quiet beauty of Lake Orta, with the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Alps.
The journey begins at Lake Maggiore, where the grand promenade of Stresa and the extraordinary Borromean Islands set the tone for what follows. The path then climbs to the summit of Mottarone mountain at 1,489 metres, where a traditional mountain refuge and a dinner of Italian mountain cuisine reward the ascent with some of the finest views of the Alps available on foot.
The walk concludes at Lake Orta, the smallest and most intimate of the Italian lakes, winding through olive groves, vineyards and quiet villages in a landscape that feels genuinely unhurried and apart from the more visited corners of the region.

Where You'll Stay
During this tour, you will stay in double occupancy rooms with private facilities across Stresa, Mottarone and Orta. Accommodation is in two-star hotels throughout, with one night spent in a charming mountain refuge, an experience shared across both standard and upgraded packages. Hosts at every property are knowledgeable about the region and always happy to talk about its history, food and wine. Our team is also always available should you need anything during the walk.
It is worth knowing that Italian hotel ratings do not always correspond to international standards. A three-star property in Italy will often sit closer to a two-star hotel by international comparison. B&Bs on this route are simple in style though some carry real charm, with varying room types and prices.
What You'll Eat
Five breakfasts are included throughout the trip, one each morning before the walking begins. On day three, dinner is also included at Mottarone. Beyond that, lunch and dinner are yours to explore, and this part of Italy puts a serious spread on the table. Your walk notes will include insider tips on where to find the freshest bread, where to taste local olive oil and wine, and which dinner spots are worth seeking out. Your hosts are always happy to add their own recommendations as well.
Note: Please advise us of any food allergies or intolerances at the time of booking. If you have severe allergies, bringing some of your own snacks is recommended, as specialist ingredients can be harder to source along the way.
